Wireless stereo headphones allow you to wander freely while listening to your audio device.

There are basically three different technologies that make this possible:

  • Infra Red (IR) headphones use the same technology as your TV remote control. There are two big downsides to using IR technology for headphones. One, you have to be within line of sight with the base unit. Two, the range is limited to about 30 feet. This is fine if you are lounging within line of sight of the unit, but not so good if you want to wander away and still have a good signal.
  • Radio Frequency (RF) headphones offer more flexibility. You don't have to be in the line of sight with the base unit and you can wander very far away- up to 300 feet or so with the high quality models. These are great for listening to music on your stereo or computer while being able to wander about the house, or even outside! Chores are a snap with these must have accessories.
  • The downside to both the IR and RF options is that you usually get a reduction in the quality of the sound. With the RF headphones, you can get the same issues as with a radio: You may have to mess with the dial to find a perfect sound, and even then, you may move into specific spots with worse reception.
  • The Bluetooth technology is the new answer to IR and RF technology, and allows excellent reception, but at a smaller range than some of the RF technology. However, bluetooth allows wireless technology for use with some of our newest technologies out there. These headphones can switch from audio listening to telephone use with the push of a button.
